Raising Awareness for Epilepsy and SUDEP

(Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy)

On the 2nd of April, 2024, the small regional communities of Nobby and Clifton were devastated by the loss of one of their most kind, loving and generous young people you would have met. Lauren was cheeky and loved to give people a hard time and enjoyed a good prank. She loved living on a farm, her dog Winnie and showing cattle.

Lauren had her 1st seizure the day after her 17th Birthday. She was diagnosed shortly after. Her Epilepsy journey would last not quite 4 years, where she would end up on 3 different medications. Each one having their own side effects. She would not be able to drive for most of that time and was constantly tired and unwell.

But she would not let Epilepsy hold her back. She loved to go out with friends, loved her independence, was completing uni and started to think that her dream of becoming a Jillaroo or Governess could come true.

She never hid away from her diagnosis; she not only told everyone but also informed them of the first aid they needed to know and promoted it regularly.

Lauren went to bed that night and never woke up.

At Lauren’s funeral, Lauren’s parent Craig and Susan Smith, still dealing with the overwhelming loss, began the journey of raising awareness around Epilepsy and SUDEP as it affects many Australians. That passion at such a tough time lead to Jack speaking with Craig at the wake; “We have an idea that might help you bring more awareness to Epilepsy, leave it with us and we will see if we can make it a reality.”

In December of 2025, OBrienco with the help of their suppliers, unveiled ‘Lozza’s Legacy,’ a truck dedicated to Lauren and her passion for raising awareness for the decease that took one of the brightest lights away from this world too soon.

Lozza’s legacy is used for ongoing fundraiser events and is accessible to Epilepsy Queensland as a tool for those fundraisers.
